A Home on a Dark Ground: Lines Linking Inside and Outside
A large house contains a smaller window, and the window contains people. Zhan Yining, also known as Monica, brings buildings, figures and words together in My Home, a rainbow scratch artwork. Much of the dark ground remains visible, while coloured lines carry the details. This editorial observation follows the house, window and lettering without identifying the figures as particular relatives or treating the drawing as a record of an actual home.

Trace the larger house first
Two adjoining pointed roof shapes occupy the centre, with wall lines extending downwards and a doorway near the bottom. Colour changes along the lines, yet the architectural boundary remains legible. Follow an edge before naming every colour segment. That reveals the whole arrangement. Roofs, walls and openings are pictured shapes here; they do not establish a real location, number of floors or measured building area.
A window gathers the figures
Three small figures appear inside a window on the right-hand house, with heads, bodies and arms suggested by a few lines. The window is much smaller than the building but holds a cluster of details that can draw attention. The larger outline establishes a place to look; the smaller marks reward a closer view. This nested arrangement can be described without identifying the people.
The words have positions of their own
The words 开心 and 快乐 appear in the roof areas; a name and Monica appear on the right, with the title written near the lower right. The lettering shares the picture rather than forming a separate caption outside it. Compare its scale with the figures and notice the dark spaces accommodating it. The title is visible evidence, whereas the words alone do not establish what happened while the work was being made.
The remaining dark ground matters
Much of the wall and roof interiors remains dark, allowing the coloured lines, figures and letters to remain clear. Heart-like outlines and small coloured marks also occupy the surrounding space. The original page identifies rainbow scratch art as the medium. This note describes the visible result, rather than inventing a particular tool, sequence of scratches or material brand.
Try three focused readings
Read the image three times: for the building outline, the window details and the lettering. Write one observation for each that you can locate in the picture before describing a preference. This is an editor-suggested exercise, not a record of Monica’s classroom activity. In the portfolio, the original image preserves her marks, while AI-assisted editorial writing offers a route for returning to them.
Two more questions
Where does the title My Home come from?
The lower-right inscription names the work 我的家园; the work page explicitly identifies this as the source of its title.
Who are the people in the window?
The available material does not confirm their identities. The note describes three visible figures.
