Math Adventure Island: a place for each idea you work out

Math Adventure Island arranges practice around an explorable map. Completing a topic brings a landmark to life, with tasks covering numbers and estimation, area and fractions. It keeps a sense of progress while allowing time to think: there is no countdown, and diagrams, hints and retries are available. The reason behind an answer matters alongside the completed places.

Eleven places organise different questions

The eleven topics move through place value and rounding, estimation, base and height, several area relationships, composite shapes, and fraction comparisons and operations. Every location is open to explore. Choose the question that needs attention rather than treating the map as a compulsory queue. A learner who remembers “base times height” but is unsure which height to use can begin with Height Detective. Someone comfortable with individual shapes can try splitting or completing a composite one.

A short expedition makes room for thinking

A regular topic expedition contains six tasks, with diagrams or quantity relationships where useful. Choose an answer and check it, or request a hint when needed. Completion and independent first answers are recorded separately, so a task solved with support is not presented as an unaided first attempt. That distinction can guide a useful review: which ideas can you now explain yourself, and which still need a diagram or prompt? The result becomes information for choosing another activity, not merely a total.

Look inside a formula

The hands-on workshop offers models for rearranging shapes, sampling and comparing fraction bars. These connect symbols with a relationship that can be inspected. In an area problem, a long sloping edge is not automatically the corresponding height. In a fraction problem, the size of the denominator alone does not settle the comparison. Describe what the diagram is comparing before carrying out the calculation. This gives a formula or numerical answer something visible to refer back to when explaining the reasoning.

Revisit an idea with fresh numbers

The repair station keeps concepts that need another attempt and revisits them with fresh numbers. An independent correct response clears the relevant item. Mixed expeditions bring different topics into one round, inviting the learner to recognise which method fits each question. Progress stays in the current browser and can be exported or imported through the field journal. The island provides practice and discussion opportunities; its route can be chosen alongside the textbook and classroom work currently being used.

Two more questions

Must topics be unlocked in order?

No. All eleven topics are open, with mixed expeditions and the repair station also available.

Can I complete a task after using a hint?

Yes. Completion and independent first answers are recorded separately; stars reflect the share answered independently in that expedition.
