Why Doesn’t a Great Practice Run Replace the Official Score?
The same piece can be heard, practised slowly or played in the official mode. Melody Garden on Monica’s website offers all three, but does not treat them as equivalent score sources. This editorial analysis follows the existing interface and code to examine how adjustable practice is separated from official records. It reports neither Zhan Yining’s piano results nor an assessment of piano proficiency based on a rhythm game.

Listening is a different kind of visit
The listening entry offers the project’s melody with an explicit notice that it does not change scores or collected pages. In this mode, key input does not participate in the usual note judgement, and the ending uses a listening message. Someone wanting to become familiar with the music therefore has a separate entry without first completing an official challenge. This observation does not evaluate audio quality or playing proficiency.
Practice can change speed and section
Practice settings offer speed and a choice of the whole piece, its opening half or ending half. A reader can focus on one section rather than start with the full piece every time. Those conditions differ from official play. Even if hits and a session score appear, they need not replace the same official record. Adjustable conditions and the scope of saved results are separate design decisions.
Finishing a session does not always update a record
The completion logic calculates a session result before entering the branch that updates best scores and collected pages only for official play. Official records are keyed by piece and difficulty, and an existing best is replaced only by a higher score. A practice result can therefore describe the current attempt without changing that record. This is a reading of the code, not a claim that a reader or Monica completed a perfect run.
Picture-book pages follow the official branch too
Under the current rules, official play reaches the first star at 35% accuracy, and a piece not already collected can then add its page. Practice and listening do not unlock pages through that branch. The 35% threshold belongs to this game, not to a music examination or an assessment of a child’s learning ability. Stating its scope prevents a game number from becoming an unsupported real-world judgement.
Choose the goal before the mode
To become familiar with a melody, listen; to work on one section, practise; to keep an official record at a chosen difficulty, use official play. Write one goal for each mode and consider whether the interface explains its consequences. This editor-suggested route is not Monica’s personal practice plan. AI-assisted coding can implement the rules, while player-facing language must still explain when records change and when they do not.
Two more questions
Does a practice score overwrite the official best?
Not under the current completion logic; updating the best score is limited to official play.
Is 35% a piano examination pass mark?
No. It is a threshold within this web game for its first star and picture-book progression.
