Identify the cohort and applicant first
As checked on 7 October 2026, the official Micro Fund page lists 9 October at 1:00 pm as the deadline for 2026/27 Cohort 1. The person in charge must satisfy the specified PolyU-community or technology-licensee connection; this is not a general grant open independently to every external team.
Page 7 of the current handbook permits applications before incorporation. Existing companies must meet the 24-month incorporation window before the deadline, while Stage 1 Top Performers must incorporate before the Final Pitch. Consult the cohort documents for full eligibility and approval requirements.
This lets founders connect, without conflating, two workstreams: whether the venture is worth pursuing and how its company should be prepared. Applying without a company does not remove later questions about the entity, bank account, IP or responsibilities. Nor should a deadline push founders into equity arrangements they do not understand.
A support ceiling is not today's spending budget
The official page pairs HK$120,000 of Micro Fund support for final winners with up to HK$1.29 million in Science Park incubation support, presenting a combined ceiling of HK$1.41 million. The latter has separate conditions, with conditional offers at HKSTP's discretion. The page also flags a SAFE requirement at incubation Stage 2.
Do not enter that ceiling as an existing bank balance or describe the entire pathway as unconditional, equity-free cash. Page 15 of the handbook states that the HK$100,000 seed-fund portion is paid in two instalments, subject to progress and relevant conditions. Confirm agreements, disbursement and rights separately with the programme administrators.
Track status before adding up funding
This is an editorial working table, not a PolyU application form or assessment rubric:
| Status | Evidence the team should hold | Conclusion not yet justified |
|---|---|---|
| Preparing | Current documents, eligibility review and missing materials | An idea alone establishes eligibility |
| Submitted | Receipt, document version and contact | The project has been endorsed or funded |
| Awaiting assessment or next steps | Official notices and requested actions | The advertised ceiling is secured |
| Conditional opportunity received | Written conditions, action owners and deadlines | Admission is complete and all funds are spendable |
| Disbursement approved or received | Approval, spending restrictions and bank record | Every later instalment will arrive automatically |
Update the status weekly rather than rewriting the entire pitch every day. Retain the original notice whenever it changes, so team members do not give suppliers and investors conflicting accounts.
Connect a university result to a customer problem
Consider a fictional campus sensor team. It can collect laboratory data but does not know whether a property operator would change its inspection workflow. The next important task may not be a better-looking enclosure. It may be finding a cooperative site and identifying the user, acceptance owner and purchasing decision-maker.
Separate three tests: does the device work reliably in the target setting; will staff use it to complete their task; and does the buyer consider the result worth paying for? A photograph of one demonstration cannot establish all three. This is an editorial example, not a PolyU, HKSTP or Jimhang portfolio case.
If Greater Bay Area engineering partners are then needed, explain what the prototype should test: dimensions, installation, data stability or ease of maintenance. A specific question makes the work easier to scope than a premature promise of volume orders.
Reserve time for an independent submission check
Ask someone other than the writer to check product names, team roles, evidence dates, budget versions and links across the final materials. Keep completed experiments, planned pilots and discussions about cooperation distinct. An expression of interest is not an order.
Route immigration, university approvals, IP and subsequent SAFE questions to the relevant authority or qualified adviser. This article cannot resolve them. Follow the official submission system's requirements; do not send identity documents or complete trade secrets to unrelated intermediaries.
Where a conversation with Jimhang Capital can help
The PolyU-to-Science-Park pathway illustrates why Hong Kong's university startup ecosystem is more than a collection of competitions. The useful founder question is which stage the team has reached and whose help is needed to obtain the next piece of evidence.
Jimhang Capital can discuss commercialisation questions, engineering-coordination needs and fundraising preparation, with any introductions agreed separately. This article does not imply that Jimhang is an official assessor, partner or application agent of PolyU or HKSTP. It offers no selection or financing guarantee.
Contact Justin Zhan with a non-confidential project brief explaining the customer question to test. See the firm overview and academic-founder role boundaries.
